The Early Years

The Fairchild Aircraft company was founded in 1920 by Sherman Fairchild, a wealthy industrialist and aviation enthusiast. Fairchild's goal was to create a company that would produce high-quality aircraft for both civilian and military use. The company's first aircraft was the FC-1, a two-seat biplane that was used for training and sport flying. In 1925, Fairchild hired William Culliton as its chief engineer. Culliton was a brilliant engineer who would go on to design some of Fairchild's most famous aircraft, including the PT-19 trainer and the C-119 Flying Boxcar.

In the early years, Fairchild focused on producing small, lightweight aircraft for the civilian market. However, the company also developed a number of military aircraft, including the PT-19 trainer and the AT-21 Gunboat. These aircraft were used extensively by the United States Army and Navy during World War II.

The Post-War Era

After the war, Fairchild continued to produce military aircraft, but the company also expanded its focus into the commercial aviation market. In 1946, Fairchild introduced the C-82 Packet, a twin-engine transport aircraft that was used by both civilian and military operators. In 1950, Fairchild acquired the Beech Aircraft Corporation, which gave the company access to Beech's line of light aircraft, including the Bonanza and the Baron.

In the 1960s, Fairchild began to develop a new generation of jet aircraft, including the F-27 Friendship and the A-10 Thunderbolt II. The A-10 Thunderbolt II is a close-air support aircraft that has been in service with the United States Air Force since 1977. The A-10 is known for its ruggedness and firepower, and it has played a key role in a number of military conflicts, including the Gulf War and the War in Afghanistan.

The Modern Era

In the 1980s, Fairchild was acquired by a number of different companies, including Textron, Raytheon, and M7 Aerospace. In 2010, M7 Aerospace sold the Fairchild brand and assets to the Sino Swearingen Aircraft Corporation. Sino Swearingen is now the exclusive manufacturer of Fairchild aircraft, and the company continues to produce the A-10 Thunderbolt II and the C-26 Metroliner.

Today, Fairchild Aircraft is a world-renowned manufacturer of military and civilian aircraft. The company's aircraft are used by a wide range of customers, including the United States Air Force, the United States Navy, and a number of commercial airlines and private operators. Fairchild Aircraft is a testament to the ingenuity and dedication of the men and women who have worked for the company over the past century.
