More Guns, Less Crime: The Case for Citizen Self-Defense
By John Lott
In the wake of yet another mass shooting, the debate over gun control has been reignited. Politicians and pundits on both sides of the aisle are calling for new laws to restrict access to firearms. But what if the conventional wisdom about gun control is wrong? What if, in fact, more guns lead to less crime?
That's the argument that John Lott makes in his groundbreaking book, More Guns, Less Crime. Lott, a renowned economist and criminologist, presents a wealth of data and evidence to support his claim that gun control laws are not only ineffective but actually counterproductive. In fact, he argues, more guns lead to less crime.

Lott's research has been praised by scholars and policymakers alike. In a review of More Guns, Less Crime, the Wall Street Journal called Lott "one of the nation's leading experts on guns and crime." And the New York Times said that Lott's book "is a must-read for anyone who wants to understand the gun debate."
So what's the evidence that Lott presents in support of his claim that more guns lead to less crime? Here are just a few examples:
- Lott's research shows that states with more gun owners have lower rates of violent crime. For example, Texas has one of the highest rates of gun ownership in the country, and it also has one of the lowest rates of violent crime.
- Lott's research also shows that cities with more concealed carry permits have lower rates of violent crime. For example, Chicago has some of the strictest gun control laws in the country, and it also has one of the highest rates of violent crime. On the other hand, Phoenix has some of the most lax gun control laws in the country, and it also has one of the lowest rates of violent crime.
- Lott's research even shows that mass shootings are less likely to occur in states with more gun owners. For example, California has some of the strictest gun control laws in the country, and it also has one of the highest rates of mass shootings.
Of course, correlation does not equal causation. It's possible that there are other factors that explain the relationship between gun ownership and crime rates. But Lott's research is still very persuasive. And it's certainly worth considering the possibility that more guns lead to less crime.
If Lott is right, then the gun control debate is based on a fundamental misunderstanding of the relationship between guns and crime. And that could have serious implications for public policy.
It's time for a new approach to gun control. One that is based on evidence, not emotion. One that focuses on reducing crime, not disarming law-abiding citizens. It's time for more guns, less crime.
