In the affluent suburbs of America, behind the manicured lawns and gleaming shopping malls, there is a hidden world of labor exploitation.

Immigrant workers, many of them undocumented, are toiling in sweatshops, earning poverty wages and living in fear of deportation. They are sewing our clothes, cleaning our homes, and caring for our children.

In Suburban Sweatshops: The Fight for Immigrant Rights, Saru Jayaraman exposes this hidden economy and tells the stories of the workers who are fighting for their rights.

Jayaraman, the co-founder and co-director of the Restaurant Opportunities Centers United (ROC United),has spent years working with immigrant workers in the suburbs. She has seen firsthand the exploitation that they face, and she has fought tirelessly for their rights.

In Suburban Sweatshops, Jayaraman provides a comprehensive look at the problem of labor exploitation in the suburbs. She examines the factors that have led to the growth of sweatshops, and she exposes the ways in which employers are profiting from the exploitation of immigrant workers.

Jayaraman also tells the stories of the workers who are fighting back. She introduces us to workers who have organized unions, filed lawsuits, and spoken out against their employers. These workers are putting their lives on the line to fight for their rights, and their stories are both inspiring and heartbreaking.

Suburban Sweatshops is a must-read for anyone who wants to understand the hidden world of labor exploitation in America. It is a powerful indictment of the system that allows employers to profit from the exploitation of immigrant workers, and it is a call to action for all of us who believe in justice and equality.
