In 1882, Jesse James was assassinated by Robert Ford, a member of his own gang. Or so the story goes. But what if Jesse James faked his own death and lived for another 50 years?
That's the claim made in the new book, The Hoax That Let Jesse James Live. The book is based on extensive research, including interviews with James's family and friends, and provides new evidence that supports the claim that James survived his supposed assassination.
The book's author, John Doe, argues that James faked his death because he was tired of being a fugitive. He had been on the run for years, and he knew that the law would eventually catch up with him. So he decided to stage his own death and disappear.
Doe provides several pieces of evidence to support his claim. First, he points out that there are no eyewitnesses to James's assassination. The only people who claim to have seen him die are Ford and his brother, Charles. But both of them had a motive to lie. Ford was trying to collect the reward for James's death, and Charles was trying to protect his brother.
Second, Doe points out that there are several inconsistencies in the official account of James's death. For example, the bullet that supposedly killed James was never found. And the doctor who examined James's body said that the bullet had entered his head from the back, but the bullet hole in James's forehead was from the front.
Third, Doe provides evidence that James was seen alive after his supposed death. There are several reports of people seeing James in different parts of the country in the years after 1882. And one of James's friends claimed that he met with James in Texas in 1934.
Doe's book is a fascinating and well-researched account of the evidence that suggests Jesse James faked his own death. Whether or not you believe Doe's theory, the book is a must-read for anyone interested in the history of the Wild West.
