Author Biography
Jack Greenberg was born in 1924 in rural Mississippi. He graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and the Yale Law School. After law school, he clerked for Supreme Court Justice Hugo Black. He then joined the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund, where he became the organization's director-counsel in 1961.
Greenberg was a leading strategist in the civil rights movement. He argued and won several landmark cases before the Supreme Court, including Brown v. Board of Education, which desegregated public schools.
In addition to his work as a lawyer, Greenberg was also a journalist. He wrote for The New York Times, The Washington Post, and other publications. He also taught law at Columbia University and the University of California, Berkeley.
Greenberg died in 2010 at the age of 85. He is survived by his wife, Polly, and his three children.
