Sister Helen Prejean
Sister Helen Prejean was born in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, in 1939. She entered the Sisters of St. Joseph of Medaille in 1957. After graduating from St. Mary's Dominican College in New Orleans, she taught high school for several years.
In 1982, Prejean was asked to visit a man on death row at the Louisiana State Penitentiary. The man, Elmo Patrick Sonnier, had been convicted of murdering two teenagers. Prejean was initially hesitant to visit Sonnier, but she eventually agreed.
Patrick Sonnier
Patrick Sonnier was born in Lafayette, Louisiana, in 1952. He had a troubled childhood and was often in trouble with the law. In 1977, he was convicted of murdering two teenagers. Sonnier was sentenced to death and spent the next 17 years on death row.
During his time on death row, Sonnier became a born-again Christian. He also began to correspond with Sister Helen Prejean. Prejean visited Sonnier regularly and helped him to prepare for his execution.
